GFWC Plantation Woman's Club's
Woman of the Year - Colleen Hendrix
After much anticipation, the suspense is over and GFWC’s own Woman of the year was announced at the March general meeting. Congratulations, to Colleen Hendrix, a long time member who is so deserving of our recognition and this special honor!
As an exemplary volunteer, Colleen has participated at all PWC’s major fund raising events, working tirelessly, capably and efficiently whatever the task.
As a member of our Board of Directors or as a Committee Chair, she brings her leadership qualities and capabilities with her to all board meetings and committee gatherings. Though she is an easy going member who works quietly and unassumingly in the background, Colleen is indeed ever present, a team player, who admirably will step in, present all sides of a situation, always striving to improve and make things better.
Moreover, Colleen distinguished herself with her ability and willingness to step up to the plate on numerous occasions when necessity called, assuming full responsibility and performing all duties with competence and professionalism.
When the position of 1st VP became vacant this year, Colleen took over this office, without a problem, confidently, easily working and assisting the monthly Chairpersons with their programs and reporting on them at our meetings.
Colleen’s excellent planning and organizational skills are most apparent as she worked tirelessly on our most important fundraisers through the years. Particularly, this year, when her Co-Chair, Martha Gregory’s health issues became problematic, Colleen assumed the major role, graciously stepping up and handling any and all tasks needed to produce our main fundraiser of the year, the annual Antique & Vintage Show.
Lucky for us, as Martha will attest, except for recruiting vendors, Colleen handled all the multi duties necessary, among which were: creating the themes and imagery as well as the distribution of all signs, posters and handouts;
coordinating with the publicity chair for advertising; recruiting and working with all the volunteers, and so much more… all in all a most complex enormous project. She did a masterful job, as someone described it, “operating like a high priced CEO”!
Additionally, Colleen has chaired the Garden Fest event for 10 years and has been the driving force behind this extravaganza since its inception. Always an outstanding and successful affair, it has been a good money maker for our club.
Through the years, Colleen has given her time, talents and participation not only to our club but to various other organizations for the betterment of our community. She is a gracious young woman, hard working, caring of others with a selfless attitude, one who truly has earned our appreciation and respect. PWC is grateful for everything she does and has achieved for us.
We hope that you plan to attend our Woman of the Year Luncheon, scheduled for April 13th. Please join us at the Jacaranda Country Club, lend your support as we applaud Colleen and the other honorees present representing their various organizations.
We salute you, Colleen!

March General Meeting Recap
~ Conservation ~
Dr. Renata Schneider, the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation, was our guest speaker at our March general meeting for our conservation month.
Dr. Renata’s presentation about the different types of wildlife (roughly 300 species) and what kind of care is needed when injured wildlife is brought into their hospital, was an amazing eye-opener. So much goes into helping each sick and injured wild creature in South Florida. It’s comforting to know that the Wildlife Center has trained individuals such as Dr. Renata who have a heart for caring for, curing and rehabilitating so many animals.
Dr. Renata’s slideshow of injured animals and the accompanying detailed explanations showed the members a first hand look at what happens daily at the wildlife hospital. This is definitely a spot where miracles happen daily.
There were a lot of birds discussed, but she also discussed about squirrels, turtles and opossums.
If you are interested in helping the Center help the injured wildlife, you can give by donating money, volunteering (Julie Grady was a volunteer there for 15 years), donate new or gently used cuddly toys for nursery orphans, remember them in your will or select and send items from the SFWC wish list found on their website.
Julie would like to extend her thanks and appreciation to all who helped make the March Conservation program a success.
Special thanks to Phyllis Kowal, Carol Bligh and Betty Ozelas who got to Deicke at 8:15am and made every effort to get the room set up and get everything ready for the program.
